Everything You Need to Know About RipRap
Size and Grading
- Size
- 4 inches to 12 inches and up
- Type
- Large, heavy stone
A finished RipRap face remains visibly heavy after placement, giving an exposed bank or drainage edge a plainly stoned surface instead of bare soil. Fast-draining coastal sand can still have a high water table, while clay over rock in the Brandywine Valley sheds water differently. In either setting, moving water can wear into an unprotected shoreline, bank, slope, channel, or culvert area.
Arrange the stone across the surface that water reaches, with coverage continuing over the exposed soil around the drainage route. That placement uses the material as armor, not as a replacement for the base beneath a driveway or pad. For drainage work in sandy ground, account for where water can go after it reaches the protected area. Smaller erosion-control stone may suit work that does not need this heavy cover.

Common Uses
Water's Edge Support
Creates a stone barrier at the edges of lakes, ponds, and streams to help prevent washout.
Slope Stabilization
Supports soil on steep grades and embankments so it is less likely to wash away.
Pipe Outlet Protection
At pipe and culvert ends, it breaks up the impact of moving water.
Channel Armoring
Add a stone surface to drainage ditches and spillways to help prevent scour.
Why Choose RipRap
Stays Put
The size and weight of the stone help it remain in place when water flows past.
Erosion Proof
Adds long-term protection to drainage outlets, banks, and sloped ground.
Low Maintenance
After the stone is set, it needs very little ongoing care.
Natural Look
Stone blends well with landscaped spaces and waterside areas.
