One cubic yard forms a cube measuring 3 x 3 x 3 feet. Bulk products are sold by that cube or by the ton, so ordering starts with turning the area of your job into either unit. These tools make that conversion for 24 listed materials using each product's actual weight per cubic yard. Shredded mulch is about 600 lb per yard, while crusher run is 3,000 lb per yard. They fill the same-sized cube, but crusher run weighs five times as much. That difference is why a calculator matched to the material gives a better tonnage figure than a general aggregate calculator.

Calculator math explained

Start by finding the footprint: multiply the length by the width in feet. Convert the depth to feet by dividing inches by 12 and multiply that by the area for cubic feet. Divide the result by 27 for cubic yards, then apply the material density to find tons. It is the same calculation a dispatcher uses when measurements are given by phone.

Cubic yards = (Length ft × Width ft × Depth in ÷ 12) ÷ 27
Tons = cubic yards × density (0.3 for mulch, up to 1.55 for riprap)

A wrong depth can throw off an otherwise careful estimate. For example, a 10 x 10 patio at 4 inches takes twice the stone required at 2 inches. If you do not know the needed depth, check the project guidance on that material's page first.

Choose material by project

  • Driveway or parking pad: put crusher run or road base below, then use driveway gravel or #57 stone for the finish layer. Figure each layer separately with its own calculator.
  • For a French drain, wet trench, or standing water, install clean #57 or drain rock 12 inches deep or more.
  • Use shredded mulch in beds around plants. For a border that stays in place without regular renewal, use river rock.
  • Start a sparse or bare lawn with 4 to 6 inches of screened topsoil, then install seed or sod.
  • When building up grade or filling a low spot, place fill dirt below and reserve topsoil for the upper 4 to 6 inches.
  • Build a paver patio with a compacted base topped by exactly 1 inch of bedding sand. Use the Paver Base and Paver Sand calculators to figure each layer separately.
  • Playground fall areas need pea gravel maintained at 9 to 12 inches deep.
  • For an eroding bank or shoreline, lay fabric first and place riprap in layers of 12 inches or more.

Ordering questions

What calculator do I need?
Choose the calculator tied to the material you intend to purchase, since it uses that product's actual weight. To compare pea gravel with river rock on the same path, enter matching dimensions in each. Cubic volume is unchanged, while tons and price differ.
Should my order be in yards or tons?
Use the sales unit listed on each product page. Gravel and stone sell by the ton, while mulch and soils sell by the yard. These calculators display both amounts, so you do not have to convert them yourself.
Are the calculator results accurate?
The calculation is exact, but site conditions vary. Moisture, compaction, and an uneven subgrade can change the amount required by about 10 to 15%, so results are given as a range. Crushed materials include a small extra allowance by default. Check your measurements twice to stay within that range.
Can one delivery include several materials?
Yes. Figure each layer in its own calculator, then put the products into one order, such as base stone and surface gravel, fill dirt and topsoil, or mulch and edging rock. Delivery remains free.
Are all calculator materials for sale?
Yes, all 24 are available. The result for each calculator leads to the corresponding product page with your calculated amount.
