Start with GABC for anything that has to compact and hold. It is the Delaware base material.

Ground and Conditions in Dover

Central Coastal Plain ground here is deep sand and silt. On the farmland uplands you hit Greenwich loam and similar silt-capped loams.

Along the rivers and out toward Delaware Bay the ground turns soft and organic.

A thin base fails fast on that ground. The silt cap holds water, the sand below lets it move, and a paver bed laid shallow starts to pump and settle.

The county is flat with a high water table and very little fall to the bay. Much of it drains through tax ditches, the landowner-maintained channels DNREC oversees.

Standing water after heavy rain is the usual problem, not fast runoff. Plan the base to shed water sideways rather than count on it draining away.

Work runs through most of the year here. Saturated ground in late winter and after summer downpours is the usual hold-up, not frost.

Winters are mild with repeated shallow freeze and thaw. Gravel drives and paver joints still move by late winter.

Kent County sets footings shallower than New Castle does, at a frost depth of 24 inches.

Materials for Dover Projects

Bedding under pavers and flatwork is the layer that decides how the finished surface looks in three years. Get it right and the joints stay tight and the slabs stay level.

GABC is the compacted base for drives, parking pads and shed bases. Delaware writes it into local design standards as Type B Graded Aggregate Base Course, and it is the layer that carries everything above it.

See GABC.

Crusher run is the everyday trade name for the same work. It binds and compacts into lanes, drives and base layers, and it is what many crews mean when they ask for a base stone.

See Crusher Run.

Stone dust, also called screenings or Delaware No. 10 stone, is the bedding itself.

It beds pavers, flagstone and brick and fills the voids in a compacted base. See Stone Dust.

Concrete sand is washed sand and bedding sand. It beds under pavers and slabs, levels a surface and mixes into concrete.

See Concrete Sand.

#8 crushed stone, Delaware No. 8 stone locally, works as concrete aggregate, in paver joints and as a fine topping over a compacted base.

See #8 Crushed Stone.

#57 stone is clean stone for drainage beds, underdrains and drive surfacing.

Rounded material like Natural Pea Gravel does not lock together, so keep it to walkways, patios and play areas. See #57 Stone and 3/8" Natural Pea Gravel.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about gravel and aggregate delivery in Dover, DE

What gravel is best for a driveway in Dover?

GABC is the base for a drive here, because it compacts and holds on sand and silt. Top it with 3/4 inch crushed stone or driveway gravel for the wearing surface. On soft, sandy subgrade the 3/4 inch stone also works as a compaction layer. Crusher run does the same base job under its trade name.

How much material will my project need?

Each product page has a calculator, and quantities are ordered by the ton or by the yard. Run your area and depth through it before you check out. That keeps the load sized to the job instead of guessed at. Bedding and base layers are ordered the same way.

How do I schedule a delivery to Dover?

Place the order with the date you want and we confirm the delivery window back to you. Give us as much notice as you can for Dover so you get the slot you want rather than the one that is left, and tell us up front if the site is only reachable at certain times.
