Crusher run calculator for Delaware
For a pavement-like base, calculate the compacted layer rather than estimating loose material.
Enter your project dimensions
After rolling, loose crusher run tightens by 10-15%. Buying only for the measured depth can leave the finished base half an inch shallow, so the calculator has its +10% allowance enabled. It is also called CR-6, dense graded, GABC in Delaware, or 2 inch minus on certain tickets. These names describe crushed stone that retains its fines, weighs about 3,000 lb per cubic yard, and compacts into a driving surface that tires do not easily displace.
Calculate for compacted depth
- Find the footprint in feet by multiplying lane length by width, or by measuring the pad dimensions.
- Use the required finished compacted depth: 4 inches for pavers and paths, 4-6 for driveways, and 6-8 beneath trucks.
- For yards, divide cubic feet by 27; then x 1.5 for tons and leave the +10% selected. Depth specifications apply after rolling.
Tons of coverage
| Compacted depth | 1 cubic yard covers | 1 ton covers |
|---|---|---|
| 2 inches | 162 sq ft | ≈ 108 sq ft |
| 4 inches | 81 sq ft | ≈ 54 sq ft |
| 6 inches | 54 sq ft | ≈ 36 sq ft |
| 8 inches | 41 sq ft | ≈ 27 sq ft |
Best uses and limits
- For a driveway, compact 4-6 inches for the base and add 2-3 inches of #57 or driveway gravel as the driving layer.
- Crusher run can serve as the only surface on budget rural lanes. It forms a usable crust, though summer brings dust and grading is needed every 2-4 years.
- Paver and slab bases use 4 inches, placed and compacted in 2-inch lifts. Use the Paver Base Calculator for the complete paver layers.
- Strip the ground first, then use 4 inches for shed and hot-tub pads, or 6 where the soil is soft.
- Do not use it in a French drain. The fines that help it lock together also retain water, so use clean #57 or drain rock for drainage.
Worked example: 20 x 10 parking pad
At 4 inches compacted, two hundred square feet requires 200 x 0.333 = 67 cubic feet = 2.5 cubic yards, or 3.7 tons. With the allowance, order 4 tons. Place and compact half first, then repeat with the remaining material. Two 2-inch lifts hold up longer than a single 4-inch placement. A plate compactor rental for the afternoon can cost less than repairing an early pothole. Ruts after the second delivery can reveal where compaction was skipped.
Delivery guidance
- Have the base and surface stone delivered together to keep the work moving. Delivery is free either way.
- At the far end, place the material first and work back toward the pile. On large pads, spreading downhill rather than uphill saves a full day.
- Lightly mist each lift, then compact it. Wet crusher run tightens more than dry material.
- Set aside a wheelbarrow-load for touchups. Crusher run can be used for pothole patches when needed.
Pricing details
Because it comes straight from crusher output instead of washed and sorted stone, crusher run is commonly the lowest-cost structural material at a stone yard. The +10% allowance on a 4-ton order is low-cost protection against needing another half-ton delivery. See the Crusher Run product page for the per-ton price, review Road Base too, then place both driveway layers in one free delivery.
