Everything You Need to Know About GABC

A contractor places GABC after subgrade preparation and before the finished driving or pad surface. In the Piedmont, clay over rock puts more of the bearing work on that base; along the coastal plain, sand and a high water table can change site drainage. This position lets the material distribute traffic loads before they reach the supporting soil.
GABC includes crushed aggregate, gravel, and fines that fill spaces during compaction. Work the material into a compacted layer before building above it, helping create a stable foundation for demanding vehicle use. For pole-barn pads and beach-house driveways, use the compacted base as the supporting layer below the finished surface. Review drainage conditions before surface installation, particularly near the water table at the site.

Common Uses
Road & Highway Construction
Beneath asphalt or concrete, road base works as the load-spreading layer for roads and highways. It forms the structural course over the subgrade, especially where clay over rock around Wilmington needs a firm bearing layer.
Heavy-Duty Driveways
A driveway carrying heavy trucks, equipment trailers, or regular commercial traffic needs a firm foundation. Road base helps limit ruts and surface breakdown under repeated weight.
Construction Site Access Roads
Road base can be placed for jobsite entrances and travel lanes, temporary or long term. It provides a firm surface for equipment and helps keep site traffic moving during wet weather.
Commercial Parking & Loading Areas
For parking fields, loading docks, and industrial work areas, road base forms the underlying layer where vehicles and equipment operate each day.
Why Choose GABC
Maximum Load Capacity
For areas carrying fully loaded dump trucks or industrial equipment, road base provides a densely compacted foundation. It distributes the load through the base rather than concentrating pressure in one spot.
Road Base Material
Choose road base for the support layer your project calls for. Review the specifications in your project plans before ordering.
All-Weather Performance
When placed and compacted correctly, road base holds its form during wet spells, dry weather, and moderate frost cycles. Its tight, dense structure limits water movement into the layer, reducing the risk of soft spots and breakdown.
Economical for Large Projects
For broad work areas, road base can provide a commercial-grade surface for far less than paving. It is a practical choice for access roads, parking sections, and work yards where strength and cost both matter.
